The
Spaniards were the first to drink chocolate in any
quantity, the monks who manufacture chocolate tried
to keep it a secret. However, they played a big part
in making chocolate popular when they took it to France as presents
for their French brothers.
After getting to the royal courts chocolate could not be stopped from spreading over the mountains and into France in the early 1600 by Anne of Austria, the queen of Louis XIII. Then later in 1660 Maria Theresa the queen of Louis XIV made chocolate very popular at the Court of France. A French historian later wrote that Maria Theresa had only two passions, chocolate and the king.
Cocoa was not introduced into England until around 1648, up until the late 1590’s sailors such as Drake and Frobisher were tossing the valuable cocoa that they found in the holds of captured Spanish ships into the sea in disgust and disappointment.
Chocolate was first introduced to London around 1640’s but by 1700 chocolate houses had become very popular. Chocolate was not very well accepted when it first came to Europe because it did not taste very nice at the time. It was the introduction of sugar into chocolate that made it popular.
It was thought that one Ounce of Chocolate contains as much Nourishment as a Pound of Beef and some people believed that because of the properties in Chocolate it will preserve Health, and prolong Life. Long ago old wine was called the milk of old men, but chocolate has taken over and has become for older people what Milk is to Infants. If we were to examine the ingredients of Chocolate, and considering the constitution of older People, it would appear that chocolate was made on purpose to remedy an older persons defects, and that it might just be the “Panacea” of old age.
Carolus Linnaeus the Swedish botanist called the fruit of the cocoa tree, Theo-broma, which is Greek for "Food of the Gods”. Today, chocolate is probably the most popular luxury food around and is highly unlikely that it will ever go out of fashion.
Sometimes people like to share their luxury, however, you should never share chocolate with your pets. Chocolate is very toxic to many animals and can cause digestion problems that could eventually poison them.
